If you recently had to take down a tree in your yard, you may feel that the stump left behind is an eyesore. However, you may believe that it is a minor nuisance and that you can simply get used to the sight of it. However, there are a couple of potential problems that could be caused by leaving a dead, rotting tree stump in your yard.

1.  Stump Becomes a Safety Hazard

One potential problem that arises when you have a tree stump sticking out of the ground on your property is that it instantly becomes a safety issue. Especially if it is on or near a regular pathway you take through your yard, it can quickly become a trip hazard.

While you may think that you will remember that it is there, you may forget while walking through your yard. Or, if you have kids, they may run through the property without paying attention. If you or your kids run into the stump, you could fall and hurt yourselves.

Also, while you are mowing the lawn, you may be mindful of its presence and try to go around it. However, as time goes by and the stump starts to break apart, the pieces of wood will land in the grass and become potential projectiles.

2.  Rotting Wood Attracts Insects

Especially as the stump gets older, the wood will start to rot and soften. When this happens, it becomes a haven for insects that are seeking food sources and shelter.

One such insect that will be attracted to the rotting tree stump is termites. While this is a natural process and nature's way of getting rid of dead material, the termites will build a colony in the wood and the ground beneath it. If the stump is near your house, it will provide a potential gateway to the wooden structures of your home once the termites decide to seek out a new colony.

Ants are another type of insect that tend to seek out tree stumps because they can build their colony and be protected by the wood. While ants may not seem like a problem, the ants will seek out the nearest food sources, which may be inside of your home

If you have an old stump on your property, it's time to consider getting rid of the rotting, insect-ridden safety hazard. Contact a tree service that offers stump removal services to have them look at the stump and discuss available options for getting rid of the eyesore once and for all.

About Me
Staying Safe During Tree Care

Tree care might seem simple, but it isn't always easy to trim large tree branches. I started thinking about trimming my own trees a few months ago, but after struggling repeatedly to take care of things on my own, I decided that it would probably be best to enlist the help of a professional. They came out, assessed the damage my trees currently had, and then helped me to identify ways to resolve the problem. I wanted to make a blog that talked all about the powerful benefits of professional tree trimming, so that other people understand how to make their homes and gardens more beautiful.
