Do you have a tree that is looking a bit overgrown, but you do not know how to trim it? Tree pruning is definitely a task that takes a bit of knowledge to do since you run the risk of damaging a tree if it is not done correctly. Here are a few tips that will help you with tree trimming.

Get The Right Equipment

Don't assume that you can prune a tree with any saw that you happen to have on hand in your garage. The best tool that you can get is a pruning saw, which is a handheld saw with a sharp, serrated blade and is designed for getting close to the trunk of the tree to make very precise cuts. You will also want pass-through pruning shears, which is a special type of shears where the blade doesn't come to a complete stop when closed. The blade actually goes past the other blade to help form a clean cut through a branch.

Know How To Avoid Damaging The Trunk

A common problem that happens when pruning a tree is that people do not know how to take down large branches. This can lead to the weight of the branch coming down too quickly, which tears a chunk of bark off the main trunk. The solution is to take the branch down in sections so that this does not happen. You'll also want to make undercuts in the branch so that the branch snaps off far before the portion next to the trunk.

Know Which Branches To Cut

While it is important to prune a tree so that it looks good, you should focus on certain branches that need to be pruned for a valid reason. This includes branches that are dying, as well as any branches that are rubbing together because they are crossed.

When it comes to identifying dead branches, you want to look for branches that are dry and brittle, especially underneath the bark. Even if there are not active buds on the branch, it still may be healthy and just not getting the sun or moisture it needs to thrive. If the branch is dead, it is not going to start growing again, so it needs to go.

Not sure what you are doing when it comes to pruning trees? Reach out to a professional in your area that can handle it for you.

About Me
Staying Safe During Tree Care

Tree care might seem simple, but it isn't always easy to trim large tree branches. I started thinking about trimming my own trees a few months ago, but after struggling repeatedly to take care of things on my own, I decided that it would probably be best to enlist the help of a professional. They came out, assessed the damage my trees currently had, and then helped me to identify ways to resolve the problem. I wanted to make a blog that talked all about the powerful benefits of professional tree trimming, so that other people understand how to make their homes and gardens more beautiful.
